About UK, Roll of the Indian Medical Service, 1615 -1930

Historical Context

The Indian Medical Service can trace its roots to individual surgeons aboard various vessels bound for India from Europe during the 1600s and 1700s. Many of those listed in the earlier years were not commissioned officers but warrant officers who served as Surgeon's Mates (Assistant Surgeons).

Lieutenant Colonel D. G. Crawford made it his endeavour to name every man who served in the land medical service. The majority of those listed were born in in the British Isles or India. In all other cases, the place of birth is given.
