U.S., Southeast Region Farm Ownership Case Files, 1938–1946

This database contains an index of names and other details extracted from agricultural loan case files to preserve an official record of the loans. Actual records can be found at the National Archives.

The Farmers Home Administration has operated under different names, but it began in 1935 with the mission of providing loans and grants to help farm families struggling under the weight of the Great Depression. The Administration’s chief tool was supervised credit programs that provided loans, grants, and financial and other guidance to help farmers become self-sufficient and to allow some tenant farmers to buy their own land. Loans documented in this database were made to farmers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The index entries include (as applicable) name, lessee, age, race, county, town, state, acres in farm, crop acres, number in family, land owner, and land name.
