An index to the birth, death, marriage, and obituary notices from the Shoalhaven News, 1867–1873 is in this database. Information available includes surname, event date, location, and related kin. Because the information is compiled from newspaper notices some events recorded in the index contain additional details.
Although newspapers are unofficial sources the supplementary information they can provide about an event greatly enhances the researcher’s knowledge of the surrounding circumstances. Often they can act as substitutes for civil records when the latter may be damaged, destroyed, or non-existent. Additionally, since newspapers are a compilation of thoughts and opinions specific to a geographic region they are a revealing view into the ethnic, social, and political culture of an era and location.
Some of the above information was taken from:
- Hansen, James L. "Research in Newspapers," chap. 12. The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy. ed. Loretto Dennis Szucs and Sandra Hargreaves Luebking (Provo, Utah: Ancestry, 2001).
Information in this database may include:
- Event date and location
- Parents' names
- Spouse name
